Home/Services/Furnace Puffback

Furnace puffback cleanup

A puffback sprays oily black soot through the entire house in seconds — walls, ceilings, curtains, clothing, the inside of every cabinet. It looks like a disaster because it is one.

What a puffback is

When an oil burner misfires, unburned fuel builds up in the combustion chamber and then ignites all at once. The blast pushes soot backward through the heating system and out into the living space through every register. In a forced-air system, that means every room.

Puffback soot is oily and sticky. Wiping it spreads it and drives it into paint and fabric. It needs dry-cleaning methods first, then the right solvents, and usually a full HVAC cleaning — otherwise the system re-distributes what’s left every time the heat cycles.

What to do (and not do)

  • Do shut the heating system down and call your oil company or HVAC contractor to service the burner.
  • Don’t wipe soot from walls or ceilings — you’ll smear it in permanently.
  • Don’t run the furnace blower or use a household vacuum on the residue.
  • Do photograph the rooms for your claim before anything is touched.
  • Do call us. Puffbacks are almost always a covered loss.

Scope of a puffback cleanup

Structure cleaning ceiling-down, contents cleaning or pack-out, HVAC duct cleaning, filter and register replacement, textile and soft-goods handling, deodorization, and prep for any repainting that’s needed. We coordinate the whole thing with your adjuster.

Why property owners call us

  • You get a person, not a call center. Our phones are answered live, 24 hours a day, by people who live and work in this region.
  • Certified crews. IICRC-certified technicians, plus New York State certification for mold work.
  • We handle the insurance side. Documentation, photos, moisture logs and estimates go straight to your adjuster in the format they expect.
  • Local and family-owned. 25+ years in the Capital Region — not a franchise passing your job to a subcontractor.

Not sure whether it’s worth a call? It is. Estimates are free, we’ll tell you honestly if you don’t need us, and the cost of waiting is almost always higher than the cost of finding out. 518-766-9595

Don’t wait for it to dry on its own

Water spreads. Soot sets. Mold can follow.
