Why the cleaning order matters

Soot is acidic. On metal, stone and finished surfaces it starts etching within days, and heat pushes residues deep into porous materials. Cleaning in the wrong order — or with the wrong chemistry for that fuel type — grinds residue in permanently instead of lifting it.
